Gary Davis of Pontiac honors the memory of his mother with every hour he donates as a volunteer for a fundraiser that benefits Oakland Literacy Council (OLC).
Several years later, Gary and his wife Barbara moved back to his hometown. “I remember Gary called me and simply said, ‘What can I do to give back to the community?” says Sue Klunk, former OLC staff member and current board vice-chair.
Sue connected Gary with Bookstock, a massive annual used book and media sale that raises money for literacy in southeast Michigan. As a Bookstock partner, OLC receives funds for every hour Gary and other volunteers work on the organization’s behalf.
“Bookstock is special because its all-volunteer community helps support adult literacy by raising money for area non-profits. It’s truly inspiring to see the non-stop dedication by everyone involved, including Gary,” Sue said.

Gary is now part of the leadership team for Bookstock Operations. Every Wednesday throughout the year, he helps sort donated books and media and plan the annual event, which was held this year April 26-May 3. Plus, every day of the sale, Gary is on the scene at Laurel Park Place in Livonia, moving books, setting up tables, breaking down boxes, and more.
“It’s a way of giving back, to pay it forward. It’s a labor of love for me, a true passion project,” he said.
Gary’s dedication to service is felt throughout the community. He was just named Volunteer of the Year” at Temple Kol Ami in West Bloomfield. Gary is continuing his mother’s legacy both with his volunteer time and his positive energy – always smiling and making others welcome. OLC Chair Emeritus Judy Lindstrom recalls that Gary’s mother “filled a room with such joy.” Just like Gary.
